Safer to Switch Energy Online

Although UK energy regulator, Ofgem, has taken the gloves off approach to the dubious direct selling methods of the energy behemoths, embattled consumers are advised to take the safer option and to ‘shop and switch’ energy providers online.

Branded corporate ‘bad boys’ for making huge profits during the worst winter in 100 years, as well as sending out legions of unscrupulous doorstep salesman to hook the unwary into cost defective tariff structures; energy providers will always be more intent on beefing up their bank balances than lending a hand to beleaguered consumers.

Fortunately, dedicated online comparison websites facilitate the armchair approach in securing the most cost effective energy source in a safe, protected environment. At the click of a button all regional energy providers, together with an estimated annual account and estimated annual savings, will appear on screen.

From then on in, it’s simply a matter of selecting the most suitable tariff structure and filling in your personal details online. Required monthly payments are generally by way of a direct debit system, saving you the hassle of paying the utility bill in person or falling behind in your payments.

It’s not only safer to switch online, it’s cost effective too. Switch Energy Today!

Carbon cutting is costly for consumers…

In an effort to reduce electricity and gas expenditure in the United Kingdom, residents are looking for more economical lifestyle options. Studies by uSwitch.com show a large percentage of United Kingdom energy consumers are more ecologically aware than in 2008, but at least half of these attribute the mind shift to high electricity costs. Few people believe that the change is due to concerns for the environment, and many consumers believe that reducing carbon emissions is an expensive procedure.

Spokesperson and director of consumer policy for uSwitch.com, Ann Robinson, suggests a few solutions to the expensive procedure of reducing United Kingdom consumer energy, including dual fuel where gas and electricity is supplied by the same supplier, direct debit payments where energy suppliers offer discounts due to the low admin costs, and an online energy plan where consumers in the United Kingdom can save as much as £350 or more on their household energy bills each year.

Consumers are able to search for suitable energy packages on the price comparison site.

Hydroelectricity, biodiesel and power extracted from heat stored in the earth known as geothermal energy, are a few of the naturally generated energy sources available for the UK energy consumer.

Customers unlikely to benefit from low oil prices…

Energy providers have come under increasing pressure to pass current low oil prices on to consumers, who have become increasingly aware of the ease with which they can change suppliers through services such as uSwitch.com.

Now that oil prices have dropped to under $40 a barrel, consumers, many of whom have seen their energy costs triple in the last year, are looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. However, Dr Paul Golby, the U.K. chief executive of German utilities company E.On, says consumers will not benefit from low oil prices. He says profits are currently too low to enable providers to finance large capital projects, such as new power plants. Energy companies will be unable to fund these projects and supply may be affected. On the other hand, says Golby, customers may see lower costs if oil prices continue to fall.

Companies such as uSwitch.com help consumers to find the right utilities provider for their needs, and this has encouraged energy providers to offer more competitive rates. uSwitch is a free switching service that allows customers to shop around and find the best prices of a wide range of products and services, including gas and electricity, telephone, broadband and many financial products such as insurance and credit cards.

Chris Eagle, commercial manager of Energy Choices.co.uk, does not believe customers should pay for these capital investments. Eagle maintains that it is the responsibility of government to ensure that new sources of environmentally friendly energy are found and funded.

Energy Meter Customers Overcharged by £464m…

The National Housing Federation (NHF) has accused UK consumer energy regulator Ofgem of allowing energy suppliers to overcharge some of Britain’s most vulnerable families by as much as £464 million in the last three years. Several of the UK’s largest suppliers still charge a premium to gas and electricity prepayment meter customers, many of whom are on low incomes or in debt, says the NHF.

Ofgem has been “asleep on the job”, says Federation chief executive David Orr, “and it must urgently start defending the rights of ordinary people, instead of protecting the profits of big business”. Comparison and switching service Uswitch.com has helped thousands of families save money on UK consumer energy, by making it easy to compare all available energy tariffs and choose the best supplier.

The good news, however, is that the cost of energy is falling. The Office for National Statistics has said that electricity prices have come down this year, compared to being unchanged a year ago. As more and more people become aware of the ease with which they can compare prices and switch suppliers with services such as Uswitch, it’s as important as ever to find the best deal on UK consumer energy.
