Easy ways to cut down your household energy bill
Saving energy is beneficial for the environment and your pocket. Energy saving in your house doesn’t have to cost you a penny, but will save you quite a few pounds.
Household heating makes up 80% of all energy bills, but if you just turn your thermostat down by 1 degree Celsius, you’ll save as much as 10% on your heating bill. If you’re afraid of unplugging your computer; then choose the ‘shut down’ option instead of the ‘log off’ option. Set your computer to ‘hibernate’ if there’s no activity for a few minutes, and don’t switch off appliances with a remote control, unplug them or switch them off at the wall socket. If the stand-by light is on, the appliance is still using electricity.
Don’t open the fridge door unnecessarily. For every minute the door is open, the fridge must work for three minutes to reach its correct temperature. Leave enough room between your fridge and the wall so air can circulate around the condenser coils, because trapped heat increases energy consumption. Defrost your freezer regularly to prevent it from working extra hard to try to maintain the correct temperature, and don’t put hot food in it, or your fridge.
