Saving Energy: Household Efficiency

If you want to save money and help the environment, you can save a great deal of electricity in your home just by following a few simple tips.

A minimum amount of effort will result in impressive savings. For instance, if you wash your laundry at 30 degrees Celsius instead of 60 degrees, you’ll save up to 20% on your energy bills.

Don’t tumble dry your washing, hang it up to dry inside your house or outdoors. Switch off lights when you leave a room, and replace your incandescent light bulbs with energy saving ones.

Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you intend to use, thereby using less energy for the element to heat up.

Cover pots and pans when bringing food to the boil, as this will ensure that the food cooks faster. Steam multiple dishes on one stove ring instead of using many rings. Match the size of the stove ring to the size of the saucepan so you don’t waste electricity on heating the surrounding air. Use the microwave to heat up food instead of the oven. Check your furnace filter on a monthly basis to ensure a good airflow through your heating system.
