Conserve Water & Save Cash

The average UK family uses 500 litres of water per day, creating 1.5 tonnes of greenhouse gasses annually.

There are many easy ways in which to save money and water, such as washing fruit and vegetables in a bowl, not under the tap, and use this water on your indoor plants or garden. Use the least amount of water in your kettle or saucepan, and this will save energy too.

Keep water in the fridge to avoid running the tap until the water is cold. Only do your laundry or dishwashing when you have a full load, because half-load programmes use more than half the energy and water of a full load.

Turn off the tap while you’re shaving, washing your hands or brushing your teeth to avoid wasting as much as 6 litres per minute. A 5-minute shower uses approximately a third of the water that a bath does, but a long shower will use more than a bath.

Toilet cisterns, especially old ones, use up to 9 litres per flush, and you can decrease this with a ‘hippo’ or ‘save-a-flush’ in the cistern, but a couple of bricks works too. Finally, ensure that none of your taps drip!
